About Us
Hope Street Group is a new generation of leaders dedicated to building an Opportunity Economy, where anyone who works hard and invests in themselves has the chance to succeed, and our nation prospers as result.
We represent Policy 2.0, a different way of thinking and acting in the policy arena, bringing new talent and tools to traditionally partisan debates. We convene leaders from business, government, and civil society to develop actionable proposals that expand economic opportunity. We also provide young professionals and practitioners an online platform where they can collaborate on policy ideas that are then shared with decision makers. We then leverage our wide-ranging networks to drive implementation of these recommendations.
Our innovative model has made a genuine impact on policy, from the inclusion of our education reform principles in the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), to our "Health Care Agenda for an Opportunity Economy," an agreement among unlikely partners in the health care industry.
Our background
Hope Street Group was launched in 2003 by a group of young professionals from a wide range of industries – and political leanings – who were deeply concerned about the future of the American Dream, our global competitiveness, and the direction and tone of our public policy debate. They believed there was tremendous untapped capacity outside of government, and that the people most likely to feel the impact of policies had a critical role to play in developing and advocating for real-world, practical solutions.
Why we are unique
We are an efficient, streamlined organization with an annual budget of about $1.4 million. We receive partial funding from The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and Omidyar Network. All other financial support is from individual donors.

Why we are unique
- Our only interest is the greater good, viewing all policy through the lens of creating Economic Opportunity.
- We bring a business perspective to policy, highlighting best practices and realigning incentives to produce better outcomes.
- We are nonpartisan in our approach to policy, and fiercely bipartisan in outreach.
- We built the Economic Opportunity Index, the only tool of its kind, to educate policy makers and the public about what matters most in creating economic opportunity.
