Development Director

Position Summary
Hope Street Group is seeking an experienced executive to expand and manage its development functions. The Development Director will be responsible for diversifying the organization’s funding base; enhancing existing donor relationships and cultivating new donors; build prospect lists of foundations, individuals and corporations; and, managing external relationships, partnerships and communications. This senior position will work closely with the Board and the CEO and report directly to the CEO.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Organizational and Strategic Leadership

  • Serve as part of Hope Street Group’s senior management team, providing strategic guidance and leadership on Hope Street Group’s overall direction and programs
  • Work with the senior management team to set both short-term and long-term fundraising goals
  • Generate and drive Hope Street Group’s fundraising strategy and objectives, creating a detailed fundraising plan and devising key performance indicators
  • Provide CEO, COO and Board with strategic support to cultivate and manage donors, serving as the lead staff member responsible for day-to-day management of Board relations
  • Work closely with Hope Street Group’s finance function on the production of regular fundraising projections for budgeting, planning and management purposes
  • Development Leadership
  • Assume a hands-on, creative leadership role in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of foundation grants and new major gifts, personally cultivating and soliciting donors as appropriate; implement a structured program for generating new leads and responding to inquiries, involving, where appropriate, the CEO, program team and other Hope Street Group personnel and members of the Board
  • Develop, manage and renew existing partnerships associated with Hope Street Group’s fundraising goals
  • Oversee and manage Hope Street Group’s fundraising program development and its execution, ensuring that Hope Street Group systematically sets and meets short- and long-term fundraising goals
  • Develop and implement a multi-year strategy for increased corporate and foundation support
  • Collaborate with Hope Street Group COO and other members of the program team to meet funding reporting requirements


Qualifications
Ideal candidate will have:

  • BA in related field, MPP, MBA or MPA preferred;
  • Extensive strategic and tactical experience (9+ years) in nonprofit fundraising;
  • Excellent organizational and public speaking skills, high attention to detail, and the ability to manage many tasks simultaneously;
  • Collaborative team player, great listener and ability to work with diverse groups of people;
  • Creativity, flexibility, tenacity, sense of humor, and high level of energy;
  • Passion for increasing opportunity and prosperity for all Americans;
  • Located in the DC metropolitan area and willingness to travel regularly.
  • Commitment to Hope Street Group’s mission, purpose and values, and to its theory of change, history, culture, programs, people and constituencies
  • A record of success in raising significant amounts of money through some or all of the following: major gifts from individuals, annual giving campaigns, innovative partnerships, businesses, foundations, corporations and the public sector
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal (e.g.: solicitation letters, donor correspondence, proposals and other materials for publication, meetings and presentations in-person, by phone and by video conference) and the charisma to use words to inspire in these multiple formats
  • Demonstrated experience in managing budgets
  • Self-confidence and strategic thinking skills with an entrepreneurial mindset
  • Detail orientation, with an ability to operate in a highly organized fashion
  • Excellent listening skills, comfortable receiving input from many sources, analyzing disparate information to synthesize a sound, well-organized plan
  • Flexibility and creativity, exhibiting determination while maintaining respect for others’ concerns and an ability to find alternative ways of reaching funding objectives when barriers arise
  • Discipline and a high energy level; a “doer” with a willingness to work hands-on with limited resources in executing a variety of development and advancement activities

Work Environment
Hope Street Group is a virtual organization and we expect applicants to maintain their own physical workspaces within in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. We conduct staff and contributor business from locations across the United States; however, we meet regularly in-person at points within Washington, DC.

Compensation

This is a full-time position. Hope Street Group offers a competitive salary based on experience with vacation, sick days, health care, dental and optional 403 (b) plan.
