Education Director

Alice Johnson CainAlice is Education Director at Hope Street Group.

Previously, she spent six years as Congressman George Miller’s chief advisor for K-12 education.  Chairman Miller, a key architect of the Race to the Top and Investing in Innovation programs, is chairman of the House of Representatives’ Committee on Education and Labor.  Alice also spent six years in the Clinton Administration, where she directed the policy office of the National Institute for Literacy and managed the work of a commission of leading business, labor and nonprofit leaders who developed education and training policy recommendations for Vice President Al Gore. Alice spent five years as an education advisor to Senator Paul Simon, where she helped write the 1994 version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.  She also directed the Children’s Defense Fund’s national grassroots advocacy program while pursuing a Master’s in Policy Management from Georgetown University.  More recently, she spent a year in New Zealand on a policy fellowship administered by Fulbright New Zealand.
 
In addition to her education policy work, Alice spent several years teaching GED classes to low-income and homeless adults and has served on the boards of several national nonprofit organizations, including the Success for All Foundation. She received her BA with honors in political science from Gettysburg College.  Alice lives in Annapolis with her husband and two children.
