School systems need to have standards and expectations that are institutionalized both within schools and adminstrative structures. With consistent, supportive systems, changing leadership will not act to dismantle them, but rather invigorate and perhaps tweak things.
I agree Sarah! I also believe that we need a strong support for our administrators. We know the system is broken from bottom up and top down. We need to have supportive administrators who are trained both in content and evaluative measures...but that can't happen unless the adminstrators have support themselves. Their job has been piled on and piled on and often we don't even see an administrator walking around or out of their offices because they are drowning in paper work, etc... so support seems to be a huge part of the system that is lacking..not just for the teachers, but for the administrators.
I know that there are many fantastic principals out there who want to be there for the staff, but truly there is not enough time in the day, to handle all the issues, paperwork and documentation that needs to happen. When we talk "support' let's make sure that everyone is getting what they need to do their best job performance. I truly believe when that happens, teachers will stay, administrators won't leave and who benefits the most? The students. That is the best result...why do other fields get this, but education is ironically so "lacking" in educating and support of our staff...from top down, left right etc..?
